About NICU

A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), also known as an intensive care nursery (ICN), is an intensive care unit (ICU) specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. Neonatal refers to the first 28 days of life. Neonatal care, as known as specialized nurseries or intensive care, has been around since the 1960s

In India there is a 3-tier system based on weight and gestational age of neonate.

Level I care

Thông tin thiết kế đặc biệt Neonates weighing more than 1800 grams or having gestational maturity of 34 weeks or more are categorized under level I care. The care consists of basic care at birth, provision of warmth, maintaining asepsis and promotion of breastfeeding. This type of care can be given at home, subcenter and primary health centre.

Level II care

Neonates weighing 1200-1800 grams or having gestational maturity of 30–34 weeks are categorized under level II care and are looked after by trained nurses and pediatricians. The equipment and facilities used for this level of care include equipment for resuscitation, maintenance of thermoneutral environment, intravenous infusion, gavage feeding, phototherapy and exchange blood transfusion. This type of care can be given at first referral units, district hospitals, teaching institutions and nursing homes.

Level III care

Thông tin thiết kế đặc biệt Neonates weighing less than 1200 grams or having gestational maturity of less than 30 weeks are categorized under level III care. The care is provided at apex institutions and regional perinatal centers equipped with centralized oxygen and suction facilities, servo-controlled incubators, vital signs monitors, transcutaneous monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps etc. This type of care is provided by skilled nurses and neonatologists.

What is Peritonectomy Surgical Procedure ?

Thông tin thiết kế đặc biệtPeritonectomy is the most common surgical procedure used with patients with this form of the disease. The purpose of the surgery is to resect the cancerous cells in the lining of the abdominal cavity. Peritonectomy is often referred as peritonectomy and cytoredutive. During the surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen to gain access to the cavity and observe the cancerous growth. It is a complex procedure that can last 10 to 12 hours and parts of the bowels, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, spleen and stomach may be removed.

Total Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove  the uterus.

  • Type of procedure: It Can be a open Surgery or minimally invasive (Laparoscopy)
  • Recovery time: Can take several weeks
  • Duration of the Surgery : It takes About 1-3 hours, Depending upon the Complexity .
  • Hospital stay:  The Patient Could Typically stay for a few days 


What to expect before The Total Hysterectomy procedure

  • The doctor explains the details of the procedure, its benefits, and risks/complications.
  • Various Blood and urine tests are performed.
  • An intravenous (IV) line is placed in the arm to deliver fluids and medicines.
  • Hair in the pelvis area is clipped.

What to expect during procedure

  • A local anesthesia that numbs the lower body or a general anesthesia that affects the entire body is given.
  • An abdominal open surgery involves making a 5 to 7 inch horizontal or vertical incision through the abdominal wall and removal of uterus.
  • Minimally invasive procedures include vaginal surgery and laparoscopic surgery.
  • Vaginal surgery is where the uterus is removed through a cut at the top of the vagina leaving no visible scar.
  • Laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) involves removal of the uterus through several small cuts in the abdomen.

What to expect after procedure

  • After the surgery, the hospital stay might last up to 5 days.
  • Do not lift anything heavy, such as shopping bags or babies/toddlers for at least 6 weeks or as long as the doctor instructs.
  • Abstain from sex for 6 weeks after the surgery.
  • If the ovaries are also removed, the woman enters menopause.

Risks and Complications

Complications are rare and may include:

  • Adverse reaction to the anesthetic
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Injury to neighboring organs/tissues such as the bladder, intestines and blood vessels
  • There is a risk of urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse, fistula formation and chronic pain.
  • Hysterectomy cannot be performed in patients who want to have children

Scenario of Uterine Cancer  effect through out the World

Uterine cancer effects approximately 3.1% of women during their lifetime. Uterine cancer resulted in 45,000 deaths worldwide in 1990, with this number increasing to 58,000 deaths in 2010.

North America and Northern Europe have the highest rates of uterine cancer. Asia, Southern Europe, Australia and South America have moderate rates, with the lowest rates in Africa and Eastern Asia.

About 81% of women with uterine cancer surviving for five years. This rate is higher with more localized cancer at 95% survival rate for five years and lower for a distant spread of the cancer, at a 16.8% survival rate for five years

Causes Of Uterine Cancer 

It is not known with certainty what the causes for uterine cancer may be, though hormone imbalance is speculated as a risk factor. Estrogen receptors, known to be present on the surfaces of the cells of this type of cancer, are thought to interact with the hormone causing increased cell growth, which can then result in cancer. The exact mechanism of how this occurs is not understood
